China's largest utility has initiated a 28 billion yuan ($3.9 billion) project to transmit electricity across three provinces and store it in mountain reservoirs to accommodate the increasing amount of intermittent renewable energy. The project encompasses a 1,069-kilometer ultra-high-voltage power line from northern Shaanxi province to the outskirts of Hefei, a city in eastern China, and a 1.2 gigawatt pumped hydro station that utilizes gravity and water to store energy in reservoirs on varying mountain heights. This initiative signifies a significant step in China’s efforts to integrate renewable energy into its power grid and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
