The FBI has issued a public service announcement cautioning the public against the use of generative AI tools to produce child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). The agency emphasizes that federal law prohibits the production and distribution of CSAM, including AI-generated images. This warning comes in response to concerns over the increasing prevalence of AI-generated porn. Despite challenges in prosecuting the creators of AI-generated CSAM, the FBI asserts that such materials can be prosecuted under US federal law against child pornography. Calls for updating laws and expanding restrictions on AI-generated CSAM have also emerged, emphasizing the need to protect children from these harmful impacts.
