Kroger cuts 2026 sales midpoint by 100 basis points as 140bp pharmacy drag leaves EPS guide intact

Kroger cut its 2026 identical-sales growth outlook excluding fuel to 0.2%-0.8% from 1.0%-2.0% after second-quarter growth slowed to 0.2% from 3.4% a year earlier. Profit guidance stayed intact: adjusted FIFO operating profit remains $5.0-$5.2 billion and adjusted EPS $5.10-$5.30.

The most useful bridge is unusually concrete. Kroger says Inflation Reduction Act changes reduced second-quarter identical sales by about 138 basis points and will create roughly a 140bp drag for the full year, larger than the 100bp reduction in the sales-growth guidance midpoint. On Kroger's own estimates, the policy effect more than accounts for the size of the headline reset.

Underlying grocery demand is still soft, but the arithmetic blocks a simple reading of the guidance cut as a clean deterioration in the consumer. Kroger is asking mix, cost savings, pharmacy and fuel performance, ecommerce economics and capital return to absorb weaker baskets.

Traffic is holding better than the basket

Independent reporting on the quarter said customer traffic increased while items per transaction fell. Kroger also absorbed a produce-related cyclospora outbreak that reduced sales, while management cited lower SNAP benefits, fuel costs and confidence as pressure on households. Revenue of about $34.62 billion was roughly in line with expectations.

The basket pattern is the more important demand signal for a grocer. A customer can keep visiting while reducing units, trading down, buying more on promotion or shifting toward lower-margin categories. Those behaviors weaken gross-profit dollars per trip before traffic itself turns negative.

Kroger's faster-growing profit pools are moving the other way. Adjusted ecommerce sales rose 20% and Kroger Precision Marketing profit increased 24%. Management said adjusted EPS growth was supported by cost savings, strong pharmacy and fuel performance and improved ecommerce profitability. FIFO gross margin excluding fuel and adjustments increased 13bp, although the operating-expense rate rose 33bp.

The company is also using its balance sheet to support per-share results. Kroger repurchased $1.0 billion of stock in the quarter and $1.2 billion year to date under a $2 billion authorization, leaving about $800 million it expects to complete by fiscal year-end. It raised the dividend 11%. Net debt to adjusted EBITDA was 1.91, below the 2.30-2.50 target range.

The retained EPS guide puts more weight on execution

Management's retained $5.10-$5.30 EPS base case now carries a different composition. Lower reported sales growth means more of the earnings case rests on policy normalization, margin management, alternative-profit businesses, ecommerce improvement and buybacks. Those are legitimate levers, but they are not interchangeable with stronger unit demand.

There is also a temporary perimeter effect. Kroger said a divestiture would reduce second-half revenue by about $10.5 million while being roughly neutral to adjusted EBITDA, mechanically improving reported margin mix. A clean read of 2026 separates the pharmacy-policy and divestiture effects from the underlying basket trend.

The market did that work quickly: Kroger shares finished roughly 2.8% higher despite the lower sales view, as the maintained earnings range outweighed the top-line reset. The key arithmetic is 140bp against 100bp. Kroger's disclosed pharmacy-policy drag is larger than the entire reduction in the sales-guidance midpoint, which is why weaker reported revenue and stable profit guidance can coexist without implying that demand is healthy. If baskets stay weak after those identifiable effects pass, the quality of the retained EPS guide will depend increasingly on cost, mix and capital return.
