Mercedes-Benz Trials Humanlike Robots for Factory Automation
Mercedes-Benz is partnering with Texan group Apptronik to trial humanlike robots for factory tasks in response to a scarcity of reliable workers. The humanoid Apollo robots will handle demanding and repetitive tasks, such as delivering parts to car assembly lines and conducting quality inspections. This innovative approach aims to increase automation without costly factory layout changes by leveraging robots that can navigate spaces designed for people. Mercedes' production chief emphasizes that the robots will not replace all factory workers but will complement their efforts. The trial reflects a growing trend in the auto industry, with BMW, Nio, and Tesla also exploring the use of robots in their factories. While robotic automation presents cost-saving and quality improvement opportunities, it is not without challenges, as seen in Tesla's previous attempts with robotic arms. This partnership between Mercedes and Apptronik may pave the way for similar applications of robotics in other industries.
