As Microsoft’s chief scientific officer, Eric Horvitz is leading the charge to balance the risks and benefits of AI in healthcare. The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) was formed to standardize and validate the use of AI in healthcare, with the goal of certifying health AI tools and establishing a national registry. The nonprofit also announced partnerships with the National Council on Health and HL7 to ensure responsible AI deployment. CHAI is not meant to be a lobbying organization, but rather to bring industry and government together to create best practices for testing and deploying health AI models. Brian Anderson, former chief digital health physician at Mitre, will lead CHAI, aiming to make the effort as inclusive as possible. The nonprofit plans to create working groups to develop standards and testing frameworks, while health systems will establish assurance labs for AI validation. The ultimate goal is to ensure that health AI models are fair and accurate across different patient demographics, leading to greater trustworthiness and dependability in AI.
