In a significant development, Pure Storage revealed its plan to roll out 1200TB SSD modules, a leap from 300TB. This breakthrough is driven by innovative Direct Flash Modules (DFMs) that circumvent the limitations posed by DRAM in increasing SSD capacities. The novel approach involves FTL mapping at a system-wide level in Pure’s controller and its software, promising a much faster capacity expansion compared to traditional SSDs. Pure Storage aims to release 150TB DFMs in 2025, followed by the 300TB version. Looking ahead, the company is ambitious about scaling beyond 300TB to 600TB and even 1.2 petabyte per DFM. While these advancements hold great promise, they come with a hefty price tag. Last year, Pure Storage quoted the price per gigabyte of its 300TB drive to be 'less than' $0.15/GB. Extrapolating, a 1.2PB drive is estimated to cost well north of $180,000.
