French data center company Data4, in partnership with University of Paris-Saclay, is pioneering a project to recycle data center heat into growing algae, to be then converted into energy. This innovative initiative aims to tackle the escalating environmental impact of data centers, ultimately leading to the creation of new circular energy sources. The planned project, set to commence in 2024 in the Paris region, has potential for significant carbon capture efficiency – 20 times more effective than trees. Data4 emphasizes that using data center waste heat for algae growth presents a more efficient alternative compared to its traditional use in heating nearby homes.
