The US is exerting pressure on Japan and the Netherlands to escalate restrictions on exports of chipmaking equipment to China, following concerns over technological advances by Chinese tech companies like Huawei and SMIC. These efforts aim to hinder China's progress in developing or acquiring high-performance semiconductors for military purposes. The Biden administration is pushing for further measures, including limiting exports of less advanced machines and imposing restrictions on servicing and repairs for machines already purchased by Chinese clients. Additionally, pressure is being applied to South Korea to join the export curbs. Chinese imports of foreign semiconductor equipment surged before the Dutch and Japanese controls were enforced, as chipmakers prepared for the restrictions. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi condemned US efforts, warning that suppressing China would ultimately harm the United States.
